Creating a personal website
Nov 9 2008, 1:37 AM EST | Post edited: Nov 9 2008, 1:37 AM EST
Hello!

So, I was thinking about making my own website and getting started on my e-portfolio. The thing is, I'm totally clueless about how to get started...I've never made my own website before. (I'm also going to make this thing so that I can show that I've learned how to do it...but that's not why I'm posting...)

I was wondering if any of you have made your own site, and how you chose your server and host, etc. Which ones are you using? I'm looking around, and it's a big internet out there, with everyone trying to sell me their hosting services! Who do I pick??

Thanks a lot!

Hi Book Finch,
I am using PBwiki to organize my ePortfolio until Angel Course Management is set up for 289 next term. (yeah one term to go.)

You can also create a simple Google Site with Pages hosted by Google. I worked on this for Dr. Loertscher's 233 class last term.
Here are some of my links.

Hope this helps,

I tried using Blogger for my Field Experience journal but it was too limiting I wanted more pages. It's good as a backwards chronology. However, I like the options for sidebar links photo slide show, book shelf, video, etc.

Hi Kev,
I've used PB Wiki and Wetpaint -- they're both actually wikis rather than personal websites, but would work for an organizational space. There are three differences between them that you might like knowing about:
1) PB Wiki offers less space (for the free version). Wetpaint doesn't have any limit that I've found.
2) Wetpaint places attached files at the bottom of the page. PB Wiki attaches files wherever you want them (in the text of a page for example) and the link will open the file with the proper software.
3) PB Wiki has no advertising -- Wetpaint has minimal Google advertising (see black panel on the left) that is related to whatever the page is about.

Bookfinch,
My experience with making my own website has been with a web design software -- Microsoft FrontPage mostly. As far as a server and host, I'd highly recommend PowWeb. They were reasonably priced, had good tech support, and allowed lots of creator control. Also good stats.

If you haven't taken 240, I highly recommend it. My course project was a departmental web site, and I used the same model to build the website I'm hoping to use for my eportfolio: http://israelsjsu.net

I use aplus.net as web hosting site and I've been really happy with them.
