Thanks for the great international relocation resources.
In the UK, we have Relocate Magazine which has a website with a huge amount of content - relocation news & views, relocation guides and even a relocation jobs board. I'm sure your readers would fine it very useful if they we considering relocating to the UK.

Library Buzz Session January 13, 2009 5:30 PM SLT Info Island Auditorium Dulcie Mills on Publishing! Debbie De Louise (Dulcie Mills in SL) will present a buzz section on publishing on Tuesday, January 13, at 5:30 PM SLT. Debbie (Dulcie) is a reference librarian at a public library on Long Island and the author of "Cloudy Rainbow," http://www.booklocker.com/books/3754.html, a romance novel featuring a virtual world that she published through Booklocker.com, a POD (Print on Demand) publisher. She will share her experience with and information about POD publishers vs. traditional publishers and then answer any questions the participants may have. Library Buzz Session January 15, 2009 6:00 PM SLT Info Island Auditorium Once Upon a Time: Stories From a Virtual Life and Why They Matter Join Jenaia Morane - Founder of the Virtual Worlds Story Project (VWSP) - for an entertaining and educational look at the importance of Second Life (SL) stories to our understanding of how virtual reality is affecting and changing our perceptions of ourselves and our world. To illustrate her points, Jenaia will share a story of her own, then lead participants in a brief writing exercise. Each person will have a chance to experience what it's like to create a simple but effective SL story. Those who are feeling brave can also share the results of their efforts with the rest of the group. A brief question and answer session will follow.
There are also 2 SL conferences coming up -- If you'd like information on volunteering for those, let me know and I'll put in your touch with the requisite powers.

For those of you in SL or who are studying virtual worlds and education, there are many things going on in SL beginning this month.
The schedule for the new Real Life Librarians in SL speaker series for the first 3 months is: Biblio Latte, military librarian - 1/20/09 @ 6 PM SLT Honoria Paine, academic technical services and library systems librarian, working full time in SL 2/17/09 @ 6 PM SLT Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks, community college librarian - 3/17/09 @ 6 PM SLT We would love to get the word out to all LIS students, thanks! Other librarians wishing to speak at these sessions should contact Abbey Zenith (in SL). They are taking place on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, but we can accommodate other schedules occasionally. Thanks!
I am Veronica Piers in SL. You can also ask me questions here.
Another thing going on in Second Life is March 27 to 29 the 2009 Virtual Worlds Best Practices Conference. They are currently looking for volunteers to help with the virtual conference in SL and to present papers. see this link for more information: http://www.slpbe.org/

I learned about this comic strip several years ago through a co-worker at our public library system. The main character is a reference librarian named Dewey. You can view this comic strip at the following website: http://www.unshelved.com/ . I usually just visit the archives, but you can subscribe to the comic strip and have a new one delivered to your email inbox every day, or subscribe to an RSS feed. All details on the above link.

Hello!
So, I was thinking about making my own website and getting started on my e-portfolio. The thing is, I'm totally clueless about how to get started...I've never made my own website before. (I'm also going to make this thing so that I can show that I've learned how to do it...but that's not why I'm posting...)
I was wondering if any of you have made your own site, and how you chose your server and host, etc. Which ones are you using? I'm looking around, and it's a big internet out there, with everyone trying to sell me their hosting services! Who do I pick??
Thanks a lot!

If you haven't taken 240, I highly recommend it. My course project was a departmental web site, and I used the same model to build the website I'm hoping to use for my eportfolio: http://israelsjsu.net
I use aplus.net as web hosting site and I've been really happy with them.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone in this forum has had experience with the following class as I am trying to decide if I will be able to maintain the prospective courseload outlined by the teacher.
I'm in Lib 240:Information Technology Tools and Applications with Kenley Neufeld. He says that we could be spending up to 20 hrs a week in this class! Is this true in your experience???
I work full time and I'm in another class (Cataloguing and Classification w/ Robert Ellet) that has a heavy workload as well, so I'm trying to decide if I need to drop a class and take something with a lighter load.
Any advice or details on your experience is appreciated:)
Thanks!

Greetings! I am a new SLIS MLIS student. I see that no one has posted since May, so I'll start! I am taking LIBR 200, 202, 203 and 204 this semester. Any advice out there?

Hi Anonymous,
cinnamar does a good job of laying some solid advice out. Also, to be better connected to fellow classmates, join the Yahoo sjsumlis group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sjsumlis/ where active discussions are held. I set up the SLISsers website mainly to serve as a reference for some of the soft knowledge we lose when we don't see each other regularly. I also set it up to organize some of the information that comes up during the sjsumlis discussions.
Lastly, in reference to cinnamar's advice to have fun, check out the Emerging Technologies Symposium the morning of Sept. 6. (See http://slissers-ets.wetpaint.com/) You'll get to learn as well as hang out with fellow classmates and alum in a web conferencing environment.
Good luck! Paige

Sooo, Summer session classes filled up really quickly this year, and due to budget cuts they will not be adding more.
I want to get started in gaining some tech/web skills, and was wondering if anyone has heard of a public school/program/online anything that teaches simple web design, etc classes. (Think the LIBR 240's courses!)
Any input would be awesome!

That's excellent news! Thanks for the info. I didn't even think about trying to get credit for any classes I could take out of the program, but that is definitely an option worth exploring. Thank you!

Establishing a system of organization early on for your materials will help when it comes time to do your e-Portfolio. The following is an example.
Create a folder for each class and within each of these create more folders: Assignments, Lectures, Handouts, Powerpoints, E-Portfolio, pertinent Discussion Board Posts, etc. Within these folders organize by assignment, if necessary: (Assignment 1: Instructions, Blank Assignment Page,Rough Drafts, Files Turned In, Instructor Feedback, etc.)
In the E-Portfolio folder for each class, keep a copy of the Green Sheet, Course Calendar, screenshot of the Roster (with email addresses), your grades, and a Word Doc called E-Portfolio. On this document, log: Class name, professor, professor's contact info, semester you were in the class, teams worked on, team member names and contact info, lists of the exact file used to turn in final product for each assignment (very helpful, especially when you go through several drafts and revisions) and all of the competencies potentially supported by this class and what piece of evidence might be used to show that it supports this competency. This might sound like a lot of work, but it's really not if you start with everything organized in this way. At the end of each semester, just take some time to put some info into this "E-Portfolio" page for each class.
Finally, keep all emails organized by class. Some of them may come in handy for proof of team work, leadership skills, etc.
You can contact your advisor as early as your first semester and begin getting an idea of what he or she expects for the e-Portfolio. Your advisor might even let you enroll in his/her 289 Blackboard class. This will allow you to see all posted guidelines for the Portfolio and to keep an eye on the Discussion Board where people who are currently working on it are talking. Also, the Plone site you will (probably) create for your portfolio can be established at any time.

The SJSUMLIS Yahoo group recently had a heated discussion about the upcoming fee hikes. Many of us pay a higher rate for the same class because of our zip code and that is not equitable. A high number of students expect that LISSTEN will actively fight back for us.

Hi Anonymous, I would recommend that you post this question via the quickslis listserv or the sjsumlis Yahoo group. I think you'll get a quicker response there than here at the SLISsers wiki as most students will use this forum as a reference tool more so than for threaded discussions. Maybe I'm wrong but SJSU SLIS already has these other forums so I don't think slissers will see a need to get that started here so much. Good luck!

Just to let you guys know. Wetpaint is currently having problems with this feature. It seems there's a bug. So far, some SLISsers pages are searchable while others are not. Hopefully this will change soon otherwise, there isn't necessarily a point to reprinting SLIS Descriptor articles in this format.
