Characteristics of a Healthy LibraryThis is a featured page

When applying for jobs, it is important to observe and consider characteristics of your potential employers. While we won't have a crystal ball telling us exactly what it would be like to work somewhere, this list can help us know what to expect.

  • Administration and colleagues are open to new ideas.
  • Good give and take between the library board and the Library Director.
  • Emphasis from the Library Director on down being on outstanding customer service.
  • A positive relationship with the community you serve.
  • Resources and staff! Understaffed departments barely can keep up, or are constantly putting out "fires". Without resources it is difficult to be cutting edge and innovative if you don't have the proper computers, software, time to learn the software, etc.
  • Working in a positive environment is very, very important. If you are working with a group of
Debbie and Donald Downers, that don't share the same high energy, positive work ethic you do, work is miserable, and you need to get out and quickly.
  • It is also important that you work in a work culture that you agree with. Is it hierarchical, friendly, task-oriented, people-oriented, etc.
  • Turnover is very low turnover, because the employees are happy, well compensated and love their job!
