About SLISsersThis is a featured page

SLISsers is an organized library of knowledge shared by thousands of students, past and present, at San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science. Not intended to reinvent the wheel, SLISsers aims to supplement the wealth of resources already available to students by covering topics that often arise from casual conversations. OVERVIEW
WHO is a SLISser? A SLISser is a current or former student in San Jose State University's School of Library & Information Science. We ask that only SLISsers contribute to this wiki.

WHAT the heck is this? SLISsers is a reference of student experiences and knowledge. It's not intended to reinvent the wheel, but complement popular resources (slisweb, ALA, etc.) to meet student needs.

WHERE do I find stuff? Use the search box or the navigation bar. Both can be found to your left. Use your browser's "Find on this page" tool to help you find text within a web page.

WHEN will I find true love? Er... Can't help you there.

WHY a wiki? To meet a need. There are 1000's of us who work in isolation, rarely meeting face to face, and SLISsers provides a means through which we can connect with each other, learn from each other, and easily access our experiential knowledge.

MEETING A NEED
SLIS education is primarily delivered in an online format thereby tackling obstacles such as geography and long commutes. However, this setup also has impacts the benefits of face to face interactions, and to some extent has fractured
  • the ability to know classmates by name, face, and voice
  • a sense of community/belonging
  • a network of support with others who share your stresses and struggles
  • an casual exchange of stories
  • the "soft" knowledge gathered through conversation starters like:
    • "I never thought I would have run for student office..."
    • "I didn't know we could publish our work..."
    • "I thought I was the only one who..."

COLLECT, ORGANIZE, ACCESS
Moreover, when such knowledge is gathered through listservs, forums, and casual conversations, it often benefits only the recipients and is forever lost in an abyss of emails, tangled in threads, or stored in individual brains. SLISsers heps to collect, organize, and improve access to this knowledge.

HISTORY
Activated January 1, 2008, SLISsers was derived from the concept of knowledge management which is a way of collecting, organizing, and accessing an institution's knowledge.

In the SLIS program at San Jose, a knowledge management (KM) system like SLISsers is useful for students who often spend most of their education in isolation, rarely meeting classmates or instructors in a face2face environment. Such disconnect can hamper students' abilities to gather "soft" knowledge that often results from casual conversations. Soft knowledge can include advice, support, and warnings and helps to establish a sense of belonging.

Research shows that besides Google, people go to other people with their questions. Consequently, SLISsers was formed to meet students' needs to have their soft knowledge questions answered in a personal and supportive environment.
